EMC Testing Cost

What is EMC Testing and What Does it Cost?

It is first important to understand that EMC stands for Electro Magnetic Compatibility. It basically deals with the issues of electromagnetic disturbances such as conducted interference, radiated emissions, and immunity problems. It does not cover how electromagnetic waves influence biological systems - this is a larger field called EMCE.

EMC Testing in Regards to New Products

When electrical products and installations are designed, they must pass certain aspects of the EMC test. Products that are used on a daily basis such as televisions, phones, computers and washing machines, are only a small part of the EMC testing base. Larger and far more complex products such as industrial installations, aeroplanes, and ships, are also a victim to this test.
Why a victim? This is perhaps a harsh term to use. However, if a company is constantly producing new products and installations, the EMC testing cost is going to add up. This will end up being a large cost in the short term; however it can avoid a lot of legal action and financial hassle in the future.

EMC and Safety

One of the main reasons for EMC testing is safety. These days, because basically all electrical products are run through an EMC test, people start to believe that they are completely safe. Unfortunately, however, this is not always true. With the rapid advance of technology, there are always more and more obstacles to work around. Because of this, solutions to even basic EMC problems aren’t taught at university, and so even those with bachelors and masters degrees are going to be a little lost when they first encounter such a problem.

Companies and EMC

There are many companies these days which deal with EMC testing. Hiring a company to help can involve a larger EMC testing cost, but it is extremely likely to be worth it in the long run. If you are only producing a small number of products, you are not going to want the extra EMC testing costs of the equipment that is needed.
If you are new to the scene, and are not entirely sure what you are doing, then EMC testing costs can be reduced dramatically if you hire someone who specialises in them. It will be easier and cheaper if you can work with a professional, as they will be able to help locate the issues at hand, and offer solutions to the problems.
